I'm helping someone I care about
A family member, friend, or person you support
It matters that you're here
The fact that you're looking into this for someone you care about says a lot. People don't always reach out for themselves — sometimes the first step comes from a friend, a family member, or a support person. That's completely valid, and we can work with you.

You can make a referral on their behalf
If the person you're supporting has given their consent, you can submit a referral form on their behalf. You'll be asked for their details and a description of their situation. If they haven't given consent yet, call us and we can talk through your options.
If someone is in immediate danger, call 111 or take them to Christchurch Hospital Emergency Department. Comcare isn't a crisis service — we're a community support service.

What to tell them to expect
The most helpful thing you can do is let them know: nobody from Comcare is going to pressure them. The first contact is gentle and exploratory. They can set the pace.

You matter too
Supporting someone with mental health challenges or addiction is hard. It's okay to need your own support. If you're a family member or carer, there are services in Canterbury specifically for you — and our team can help point you in the right direction.
" I was so worried about how he'd react to me reaching out. But it was the best thing I ever did for him and honestly, for me too."
